Baldwin Michigan and the Pere Marquette River: A Fly Fishing Pilgrimage

Holy Water in the Manistee National Forest

The Pere Marquette River in western Michigan's Lake County is, in the assessment of serious fly fishers, one of the finest trout and steelhead rivers in the eastern United States. The river runs cold and clear from spring-fed headwaters through the Manistee National Forest to Lake Michigan at Ludington — a 66-mile journey that supports wild brown and rainbow trout populations, wild steelhead runs in fall and spring, and one of the Midwest's most productive chinook salmon fisheries in September and October.

Baldwin, the Lake County seat, is the practical base for Pere Marquette fishing — a small town with an outsized number of fly shops, guide services, and rustic lodges that have been catering to serious anglers since the river's national reputation was established in the early 20th century.

The Special Trout Season Section

The flies-only, catch-and-release section of the Pere Marquette between the M-37 bridge at Baldwin and the Gleason's Landing access is the river's most carefully managed and most productive section. This designated water supports brown trout of genuinely impressive size — fish exceeding 20 inches are not uncommon for experienced waders who understand the river's complex hatches and selective feeding behavior. Wading the PM is technical; the current is strong, the bottom is irregular gravel, and the trout have been educated by years of fishing pressure. Local guides with decade-long relationships to specific pools and runs are invaluable.

Fall Salmon Run

September and October bring chinook salmon into the Pere Marquette in impressive numbers — fish that have spent 2-4 years in Lake Michigan, growing to 15-35 pounds on alewife and smelt, return to their natal river to spawn and die. Fishing the salmon run on the PM is a different experience from trout fishing: heavier gear, more physical, less technical. Guided drift boat trips during the peak salmon run are the most effective approach and are booked months in advance by regulars who know what September on the PM means.

Spring Steelhead

Lake-run rainbow trout (steelhead) move into the Pere Marquette beginning in late February and continuing through April — the spring run provides some of the most exciting freshwater fishing available in the eastern US. Steelhead on a fly rod are violent, athletic fish that run 8-15 pounds and strip line at speeds that demand well-maintained gear and strong knots. The Pere Marquette's steelhead have developed distinctive characteristics from generations of selective fishing pressure; they are harder to catch than Great Lakes hatchery fish, and correspondingly more rewarding.
