The City the Straits Built

Cheboygan (pop. 4,800) was built by the lumber industry and sustained by the fishing and shipping economy of the Straits of Mackinac. The city's downtown reflects this industrial heritage — solid brick buildings, a working harbor, commercial fishing operations still active alongside the pleasure boats. Cheboygan does not market itself as aggressively as the resort communities to the south, and it is more honest for that. What it offers is genuine: excellent fishing, direct Great Lakes access, and proximity to Mackinac Island and the Upper Peninsula.

The Inland Waterway's Northern End

Cheboygan is the northern terminus of the Michigan Inland Waterway — the 40-mile chain of lakes and rivers that stretches south to Indian River and beyond. The Cheboygan River connects downtown to the waterway system and to Lake Huron, making the city a natural hub for inland boaters exploring the chain. The Cheboygan State Park at the river mouth provides excellent camping and beach access on Lake Huron.

Straits of Mackinac Fishing

The Straits of Mackinac — the five-mile channel between Lakes Huron and Michigan — is one of the most productive fishing areas in the Great Lakes. The current concentrates baitfish, which in turn attracts massive lake trout, trophy walleye, and in fall, chinook salmon staging before their river runs. Charter fishing operations in Cheboygan work the Straits from May through October. The city's marina is the most affordable Straits-area base compared to Mackinaw City across the channel.

Cheboygan Opera House

The restored Cheboygan Opera House is a genuine treasure — a beautifully maintained 19th-century theater that hosts professional touring productions, local community theater, and a summer concert series that draws audiences from across the Straits area. Presque Isle Lighthouse

Presque Isle, 25 miles south of Cheboygan on Lake Huron, has two historic lighthouses — the 1840 Old Presque Isle Lighthouse and the 1870 New Presque Isle Lighthouse. Both are open for tours in summer; the New Presque Isle light tower, at 113 feet, is one of the tallest on the Great Lakes and the climb to the top provides panoramic Lake Huron views. The surrounding Presque Isle Township Park is a beautiful natural area with walking trails and beach access.
